6m3 Reinforced Concrete Box (6m3 RCB) (Wet Lid or Precast Lid)

The 6m3 Reinforced Concrete Box (RCB) is a Type IP-2 Nuclear Waste Container designated for use on the waste consignors site for interim storage, transport to and final disposal in the UK geological disposal facility (GDF). This container type can be manufactured in a normal density concrete mix or a high density concrete mix which provides enhanced shielding capability. The 6m3 RCB has a wet poured lid which is applied at the waste consignors site.

The 6 cubic metre box waste container is used to manufacture ‘shielded waste packages’
which signifies that it can be handled without the need for remote techniques and can be
transported without the need for additional radiation shielding. This is achieved by the
container being manufactured from reinforced concrete with walls 240mm thick which
provide the necessary containment and radiation shielding of the radionuclide contents of the waste package.

As well as being suitable for disposal in a geological disposal facility (GDF), 6 cubic metre concrete box waste packages are specified in a manner such as to qualify them as transport packages in their own right and are therefore capable of being transported through the public domain without the need for additional protection. Specifically, 6 cubic metre concrete box waste packages are classed as Type IP-2 transport packages as defined by the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material. This limits their contents to such as can satisfy the requirements for low specific activity (LSA) material or for surface contaminated objects (SCOs). 

Amber Precast are currently working on the design of a alternative lid that will make the 6m3 RCB a much more flexible container providing additional opportunities for waste consignors.

Direct Contact Handleable Containers (DCC's)

Solid Waste & Wet Waste 

The solid waste Direct Contact Handleable Container (DCC) is a Type IP-2 Nuclear Waste Container designated for use on the waste consignors site for interim storage, transport to and final disposal in the UK geological disposal facility (GDF).The solid waste DCC's are available in two forms, a thin walled and a thick walled version. The wet waste DCC is available in one form. These containers can be manufactured using a normal density, a high density, or a maximum density fibre reinforced concrete mix. 

The two versions of the solid waste DCC's have identical external features and dimensions, only the internal cavity is different. The wet waste DCC has identical external features and dimensions as that of the Solid waste DCC's but does have an additional port for the lost paddle mixer. This allows common handling plant and equipment.

The DCC containers are used to manufacture ‘shielded waste packages’ which signifies that it can be handled without the need for remote techniques and can be transported without the need for additional radiation shielding. This is achieved by the  container being manufactured from fibre reinforced concrete with walls 100mm and 200mm thick, in one of three density mixes which provides the necessary containment and radiation shielding of the radionuclide contents of the waste package.

As well as being suitable for disposal in a geological disposal facility (GDF), the DCC's are specified in a manner such as to qualify them as transport packages in their own right and are therefore capable of being transported through the public domain without the need for additional protection. Specifically, DCC packages are classed as Type IP-2 transport packages as defined by the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material. This limits their contents to such as can satisfy the requirements for low specific activity (LSA) material or for surface contaminated objects (SCOs).

The DCC's also can be housed in a Standard Waste Transport Container allowing them to be transported without the waste being fixed within the DCC.

Amber Precast have these products sufficiently developed to start prototyping for an interested waste consignor.

Universal Shielding Block (USB) Range

Amber Precast Universal Shielding Block system provides shielding in the vertical plane with capping blocks positioned on the top of each nuclear waste container stack in place of shielding that would have been provided by the roof and provide horizontal shielding by being positioned at the boundary of the storage area or in the empty adjacent package spaces as the store array is filled or emptied. This provides an effective, accelerated and cost optimised solution for an Interim Storage Facility.

The Amber Precast USB Range also allows temporary shield walls to be quickly and efficiently erected that eliminates shine paths.

In addition, the USB’s can be manufactured using a normal density (ND) concrete mix or a high density (HD) concrete mix improving shielding capability.

USB Specification

Materials
1. Concrete:
a. Normal density, self-supporting and suitable to be lifted via the Twistlock Pockets (2300kg/m3) which will be encast into the top face of the USB.
b. High density, self-supporting and suitable to be lifted via the Twistlock Pockets (3750kg/m3) which will be encast into the top face of the USB.
2. Concrete Strength: Durability 100yrs and generally to BS 8500
3. Reinforcement: To support self-weight during lifting
4. Manufacture Capacity: 3 units per week per semi-automated mould utilised.
5. Standards: To recognised International Commercial Codes and Standards
6. Stainless Steel: The Twistlock Pockets manufactured in stainless Steel Grade 316L
Surface Finishes
Machined Stainless Steel components exposed to the atmosphere are be finished to a minimum of 3.2 µm Ra
Non-Machined Stainless-Steel Surfaces are be finished to a minimum of 6.4µm Ra
Dimensions and Tolerances
Dimensions are to suit waste package as specified by the customer.
Tolerances are as agreed with the customer, however general tolerances are -0mm +6mm always ensuring shielding capability.

Twistlock material Stainless Steel Grade 316L or as specified by the customer
